British Museum
The British
Museum is well known all over the world for rich collection. It’s foundation
lie in the will of the physician, naturalist and collector Sir Hans Sloan
(1660-1753). He collected more than 71000 objects, which he wanted to preserved
after his death. He bequeathed the it to King George II, for the nation in return for payment of £20,000. The British Museum was established large based on the
collection of Sir Hans Sloane.
The British
Museum was founded in 1753. On 7 June 1753, king George II gave his formal
assent of the act of Parliament which established the British Museum. The
British Museum was founded as a universal Museum but today became a Museum of
cultural objects and antiquities.
The first
National public Museum in the world consisted with its large collection of
books, manuscripts, antiquities (including coins and medals, prints and
drawings) and ethnographic material. With
the acquisition of Montagu House the first exhibition and reading room for scholars opened on 15
January 1759. It now comprises over 8 million objects spanning the history of
world’s cultures: from the stone tools of early man to twentieth century
prints.
The addition
of the cotton and Harley manuscripts introduced a literary and antiquarian
element and that the British Museum now became both National Museum and
Library.
In the early
19th century high profile
collections of Sculpture began to be laid and Greek, Roman, Egyptian artifact
dominated the antiquates displays.
In 1840 The
Museum engaged outdoor excavation. Collections from Assyria, nimrod, Nineveh
helped to make Museums a focus for Assyrian studies. First stone sculptures
arrived at the Museum from excavation carried out at the Nimrud site in the
Middle East.
After appointment of Augustus Wollaston Franks the Museum begun to collect first time British and European medieval antiquities, prehistoric and ethnographic and archaeological antiquities and other ancient material as well as oriental art and objects and later start to collect all kind of objects from another wonder of the Ancient world.

In 1807
the Department of Antiquities was founded than the
importance of antiquities was recognized.
More classical objects became part of collection including sculptures
from the temple of Apollo at Bassae, the Parthenon sculptures Nereid monument
and remains of the Mausoleum of Halikarnassos.
The Department
of Antiquities was divided into three new department in1860. Greek and Roman Antiquities,
Coins and Medals, Oriental Antiquities.
Natural history collections are important part
of British Museum. New British museum (Natural history), became now Natural
History Museum.
The Museum
Collections had so much increased that Museum building was no longer big enough
for them. Solve the problem purchased 69 house and demolished them. First stage
was construction of the northern wing beginning 1906.
Its Collections
were collected in Central Africa, central Asia. Around this time, the American
collector J Pierpont Morgan donated a substantial number of objects to the
museum including prehistoric artifact and coins.
The Queen Elizabeth II Great Court. Built in the space vacated by the library, reflected the most recent public expansion at the Museum. At two acres, it is the largest covered public space in Europe. In the centre is the restored reading room. While around and beneath it new galleries and am education centre built.
