State Hermitage Museum

In the History of Museum the Hermitage Museum’s history is much rich. It is one of the largest, oldest, artistic, culture and historical museum in saint Petersburg, Russia, and one of the largest museum in the world. The Hermitage is former palace of founded in 1764. The museum starts its history from collection of works art which were opened to the public by Russian empress Catherine II since 1852.  Its collection is so large but permanent display only small part.

Catherine II started the collection by purchasing painting from Berlin merchant Johann Ermst Gotzkowsky. The collection consisted of Rembrandt -13 paintings, Rubens-11 paintings, Jacob Jordaens-7 paintings, Anthony van Dyck-5 paintings, Paolo Veroness -5  paintingsFrans Hals-3 paintings, Raphael-2 paintings, Holbein-2 paintings, Titain-1 paintings, Jan Steen, Hendri Goltzius, Dirck van Baburen, Hendrick van Balen and Gerrit van Honthorst.

The Hermitage buildings were Palace and work place of the Imperial Family. Many events were held in these building including Masquerades for the nobility, grand receptions and ceremonies for state and government officials. Catherine allowed all kind of festivities to take place in the palace. It also served as an extravagant Showplace for all kinds of Russian relics. This helped coagulated the Hermitage not only dwelling place but also as an important memorial symbol to the imperial Russian state.



Hermitage collected the largest collection of paintings in the world. The museum is especially display of Italian Renaissance and French Impressionist paintings as well as collection of works by Rembrandt. Picasso and Matisse. Visitors also focused of its Roman and Greek antiquities collection and exhibits of Siberian and interior decoration and architectural detail. Its collection so strong and diverse, and its interior so attractive in its own right. many visitors find the best way of display. Objects occupy a large complex of six historic buildings named the Winter palace, small Hermitage, New Hermitage and Hermitage Theatre, are open to the public, the most significant on the which the  the Winter Palace-the former emperor’s residence. The museum has several exhibition centers abroad. The Hermitage is a federal state property.

The Hermitage collection has more than 3 mln. Objects, including paintings by Leonardo da Vinci and sculpture by Michelangelo, which can be found nowhere else in Russia, as well as the largest collection of Rembrandt’s paintings outside Netherlands. 

Catherine the Great expanded the collection considerably. She built the Hermitage collection in large part with purchases of the private collection of Western European aristocracy and monarchy. The Nicholas II heir to the greatest collection of art in Europe.

The Egyptian collection including Castiglione, ancient Mesopotamia, Assyrian, Babylon, Dur-sharrukin and Nimrud’s collection has occupied a large hall on the ground floor in the eastern part of the Winter Palace. Classical Antiquities occupies most of the ground floor of the old and New Hermitage buildings.


Prehistoric artifacts and  the culture and art of the Caucasus are located in the ground floor in western wing of the Winter Palace. The world’s oldest surviving knotted-pile carpet and well-preserved wooden chariot, both from the 4th-3rd centuries BC, preserved in as well as the second treasure gallery.  The prehistoric artifacts were excavated all over Russia and other parts of the former Soviet Union. The second treasure gallery, located on the ground floor in the southwest corner of the Winter Palace, western jewellery from the 4th millennium BC to the early 20th century AD  features jewellery from the  Pontic steppes, Caucasus and Asia.

Painting, Sculpture, Majolica and tapestry from Italy of the 15th-16th centuries preserved the Italian Renaissance Galleries in the eastern wing of the New Hermitage. The Gallery known as the Raphael Loggias.

A large room in the eastern part of the New Hermitage called Knight hall display of coins, now hosts a collection of Western European arms and armour from the 15yh 17th centuries, part of the Hermitage Arsenal collection.

German fine art of the 16th century by German artists hans Wertinger, Lucas Cranach the Elder, Barthel Bruyn the Elder ,Caspar David Frienrich, Anotn Mengs, Hans Thoma as well as paintings of Swiss painters Angelica Kauffman, Alexandre Calame, Among Bocklin and Ferdinand Hodler and British fine art from the 16th to 19th century including Thomas Gainsborough and Joshus Reynolds paintings French fine art of 15th- 18th century, including paintings by Poussin, Lorrain, Wattteau  display the in southern Faced of the WinterPalace.

Russian culture collections and host the exhibition of Russian art from 11th to 19th centuries display the eastern, northern and western sides of Winter Palace in Hermitage Museum complex.

In her lifetime Catherine the great II acquired from the old masters 38,000 books, 4,000 paintings, 10,000 drawings, 10,000 engraved gems, 16,000 coins and medals and a natural history collection fulfill in two galleries. I n the art world Catherine succeeded in scoured a large achievement. She collected thousand of fascinating pieces of artwork that were much size and value. The representation of Catherine alongside Minerva would come to be a known tradition of enlightened patronage in Russia. Catherine took great pride in her collection. Through art collection, Catherine gained European acknowledgment and acceptance. In 1764 Russian Empress Catherine the Great purchases a considerable collection of western European paintings, laying the foundation for the modern-day Hermitage. Today, the Hermitage is one of the largest Museum in the world.  Its great achievement of Catherine the great. In the history of museum Catherine took great role in the world.



Hermitage Museum taken the on-going construction of the Staraya Derevnya open storage facility and laboratory complex as well as the renovation of the General Staff Building to house its collections of contemporary art and the addition of Palace Square and the Alexander Column. 

The Hermitage contains an extensive collection large number of Painting, coin and other antiquities display in many galleries. Everyday many people visit museum. Illustrious history as an educational resource to engage and encourage people of all ages and background in the exploration and understanding of their past.
The entrance ticket for foreign tourists costs more than the fee paid by citizens of Russia and Belarus. However, entrance is free of charge the first Thursday of every month for all visitors, and free daily for students and children. The museum is closed on Mondays. The entrance for individual visitors is located in the Winter Palace, accessible from the Courtyard.
